5 Search Engine Optimization Terms You Must Know!

The Following 5 (SEO) Search Engine Optimization Terms are very important for anyone with a Website to learn about. These Terms are from a Fantastic Resource Site called: www.Webopedia.com.

1. HTML

Short for HyperText Transfer Protocol, the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web. HTTP defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands. For example, when you enter a URL in your browser, this actually sends an HTTP command to the Web server directing it to fetch and transmit the requested Web page.

2. Meta Tag
A special HTML tag that provides information about a Web page. Unlike normal HTML tags, meta tags do not affect how the page is displayed. Instead, they provide information such as who created the page, how often it is updated, what the page is about, and which keywords represent the page's content. Many search engines use this information when building their indices.

3. RSS
Short for RDF Site Summary or Rich Site Summary, an XML format for syndicating Web content. A Web site that wants to allow other sites to publish some of its content creates an RSS document and registers the document with an RSS publisher. A user that can read RSS-distributed content can use the content on a different site. Syndicated content includes such data as news feeds, events listings, news stories, headlines, project updates, excerpts from discussion forums or even corporate information.

4. Site Map
A hierarchical visual model of the pages of a Web site. Site maps help users navigate through a Web site that has more than one page by showing the user a diagram of the entire site's contents. Similar to a book's table of contents, the site map makes it easier for a user to find information on a site without having to navigate through the site's many pages. Also, in SEO, a site map can make it easier for a search engine spider to find all a site's pages.

5. Spider
A program that automatically fetches Web pages. Spiders are used to feed pages to search engines. It's called a spider because it crawls over the Web. Another term for these programs is webcrawler.

Because most Web pages contain links to other pages, a spider can start almost anywhere. As soon as it sees a link to another page, it goes off and fetches it. Large search engines, like Alta Vista, have many spiders working in parallel.

Another Great SEO Copywriting Resource...

SEO Copywriting Techniques That Readers Love
Resource:
www.copyblogger.com

While the reaction to your content off-page has become the critical determining factor when it comes to search engine rankings, your targeted keyword phrase should still appear on the page itself. And while there’s little consensus in this area, having your keyword combinations appear throughout the page copy generally helps search engines further identify the relevancy of the page for those keywords.

The good news is, copywriting best practices can create compelling, engaging content that also contains repeated keywords and phrases. You never want to sacrifice readability in the pursuit of rankings, but given that links are more important than on-page keyword repetition, you should never have to.

Here are a few tips for keyword integration in your copy:

1. Titles

The most important place your keywords should appear is in the title tag of the page. The nice thing about blogging software is that your post or page title will be automatically transformed into both title tags and either an H1 or H2 heading tag as well. Remember, your headline should wrap your keywords in a pithy promise that perfectly communicates what the content has to offer.

This is great information...

What is Link Popularity?

Link Popularity by Webseohelp

What is Link Popularity?

Link Popularity refers to the number of links pointing to your site, from other sites on the web. The Search Engines consider your site important and rank it higher if several other sites link to your site.

The History of Link Popularity and PageRank

History behind Link Popularity and Google PageRank
Web, by its very nature is based on hyperlinks, where sites link to other prominent sites. If you take the logic that you would tend to link to sites that you consider important, in essence, you are casting a vote in favor of the sites that you link to. When hundreds or thousands of sites link to a site, it is logical to assume that such a site would be good and important. Taking this logic further the Google founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page formulated a Search Engine algorithm that shifted the ranking weight to off-page factors. They evolved a formula called PageRank (named after its founder Larry Page ) where the algorithm would count the number of sites that link to a page and assign it an importance score on a scale of 1-10. More the number of sites that link to a page, higher its PageRank.

Google's PageRank is important because it is one of the primary off-page factors that influences your page's ranking in the search engine result pages.

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."

Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query.

How Do Search Engines Index Websites?

Indexing Process of SEO - by SEO Help

There is a lot of speculation about how search engines index websites. The topic is shrouded in mystery about exact working of search engine indexing process since most search engines offer limited information about how they architect the indexing process. Webmasters get some clues by checking their log reports about the crawler visits but are unaware of how the indexing happens or which pages of their website were really crawled.

While the speculation about search engine indexing process may continue, here is a theory, based on experience, research and clues, about how they may be going about indexing 8 to 10 billion web pages even so often or the reason why there is a delay in showing up newly added pages in their index. This discussion is centered around Google, but we believe that most popular search engines like Yahoo and MSN follow a similar pattern.

Google runs from about 10 Internet Data Centers (IDCs), each having 1000 to 2000 Pentium-3 or Pentium-4 servers running Linux OS.

Google has over 200 (some think 'over 1000') crawlers / bots scanning the web each day. These do not necessarily follow an exclusive pattern, which means different crawlers may visit the same site on the same day, not knowing other crawlers have been there before. This is what probably gives a 'daily visit' record in your traffic log reports, keeping web masters very happy about their frequent visits.

Fine-Tuning Local Search for 2007

Small businesses may soon be able to target their online ads to prospective customers who are within a few blocks of their shops - by Jeffrey Gangemi

Karl Murphy, president and co-owner of Carolina Auto Spa, a car wash and automotive detailer with two locations outside Raleigh, N.C., says his business depends on impulse decisions—no one makes an appointment to wash a car. So the company’s entire $4,000 to $5,000 monthly advertising budget is devoted to inspiring high-income prospects in the immediate vicinity to pull in and drop some coin. “Car washes live or die within a five-mile radius. If you put a [compass] and draw around my site, that’s where I advertise,” says Murphy. “My best friends 24 miles away won’t wash at my car wash—and I’d let them do it for free.”

A few months ago, Murphy started spending about $300 a month on Google (GOOG) and Yahoo! (YHOO) pay-per-click advertising. Murphy says the pay-per-click model works reasonably well for his business but it “would be much better if it had more specificity of location.” That way, Murphy says he could target more of the impulse purchasers—real estate agents and other “wired” professionals—who may not live in his area but are there for business with time to kill between appointments.

Online Sales Reach $102B in ‘06, Holiday E-Commerce Nears $25B

Online Sales Reach $102B in 2006...

For the full year 2006, online retail spending (non-travel) reached $102.1 billion, a 24 percent increase from 2005, and online holiday (Nov. 1-Dec. 31) e-commerce accounted for $24.6 billion, up 26 percent from last year, according to comScore Networks.

“2006 was certainly an exceptional year for online retailers as e-commerce spending eclipsed $100 billion for the first time,” said Gian Fulgoni, chairman of comScore Networks. “The online holiday shopping season of course played a vital role in the year’s success.”

Twelve days during the two-month holiday season broke the $600 million mark for e-commerce spending. Just six days in 2005 reached $500 million in online sales, with the top day registering $556 million (Monday, December 12, 2005).

Wednesday, Dec. 13, marked the heaviest online spending day of 2006 with $667 million, followed by Monday, Dec. 11 ($661 million) and Monday, Dec. 4 ($648 million). Cyber Monday (Nov. 27) was surpassed 11 times during the subsequent weeks of the holiday season.

Having GOOD Title Tags in YOUR Website is a Must!

Title Tags are VERY Important...

The "title tag" in your website HTML is the phrase you choose to name your site. The general rule in framing your title is: 'what's right for people is generally wrong for search engines'. Essentially, you should try to incorporate your major key phrases into the "title tag". Just make a list of them and try to incorporate them in the title. The fact is it really doesn't matter whether your site title is a million miles away from your own name, or the actual name of your business. It's simply a device for gaining the attention of the robots.

A title tag can contain up to twenty words; but more doesn't mean better. Eight to twelve well chosen words is more than sufficient.
For best results, the first (short) phrase of the title tag should be geared towards the human reader, while the remainder can be key words aimed at the robot. Bear in mind that the search engine will display only the first few words of the title tag anyway.

Online Shopping Breaking Records...

Am I surprised with this report?... No! not at all...

Nielsen//NetRatings announced today that the total number of visits to the Holiday eShopping Index grew 20 percent year over year, from 459.5 million to 551.6 million in the week ending December 17th.

The popularity of online holiday shopping has been predicted to increase this year as patrons prefer shopping at home to the hustle and bustle of department stores. In Pricegrabber's 2006 consumer report conducted in October of this year, 92 percent of respondents said they expected to shop and buy more online this year than last year.

The top four online shopping days this year have exceeded 30 million unique users with three of those four days falling within the week ending December 17th. The first day to reach the 30 million threshold was the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, November 29th.

Are You Using Google Web Analytics?

WHAT IS WEB ANALYTICS?
Web analytics is the process of analyzing the behavior of visitors at a web site. The use of
web analytics helps organizations maximize the value of their Internet marketing efforts. By understanding visitor behavior, organizations can tailor their marketing efforts to attract, retain, and grow the value of customers.

WHY ANALYZE WEB SITE TRAFFIC?
There are many reasons why your organization might want to analyze your web site’s traffic. First, you will want to know whether your web site is attracting visitors and whether the investments that you are making in it, both
in time and in money, are
paying off.

Then, you will want to know more about trends on the web site. You need to understand where visitors came from: whether they were referred by a specific search engine, responded to an ad campaign, or used a particular keyword (either pay-per- click or organic). Content developers will want to know which pages and sections are most commonly viewed and how long visitors stay. Your webmaster and IT department will want to see how servers are performing and whether or not visitors are receiving error messages when they access various pages.

Lastly, you should learn as much as possible about individual visitors, including their names, companies, email addresses, telephone numbers, and geographic location so you can leverage this information for targeted content and marketing activities. You will also want to see what each of these individuals did on your web site, such as whether they filled out online forms, made purchases, or if they fall into any other visitor behavior segments that have been defined for your web site.

With Google Web Analytics, you can get the answers to the tough web questions... I highly recommend you look into using this Totally Free Web Analytics Tool.

Holiday Season 2006 Online Marketing - Are you Ready?

Successful Holiday Internet marketing campaigns are within the reach of any business, no matter what your budget. By following a few basic marketing tips you can create a cost effective Holiday marketing campaign.

Tip #1 - A Holiday Email Marketing Campaign - Can help you stand out in the crowd. It's all about being on top of your customers' minds and making their lives easier over the holidays. Offer your customers early bird specials, coupons, free shipping, time limited sales and countdown offers through December. Since shipping fees are a major obstacle to online sales, consider featuring reduced shipping at your online store this season.

Tip #2 - Weekly E-zine Sends - Time to breathe life into that current and potential client email list. Read up on your CAN-SPAM laws and get sending. Start now and stay in the forefront of their minds all the way through December.
Be sure to promote your website at all your holiday events, in your E-zine and in any and all ads and marketing pieces that you distribute between now and Christmas. Most important, be sure your site is ready to receive holiday visitors.

Tip #3 - Make the Gift Purchasing Process Convenient and EASY - Offer gift certificates, if you can. Although they can be issued online, many people like to give a physical certificate presented in a special envelope. Offer gift wishlists? Many people shop for themselves and give their loved ones suggestions. Make it easy for them to do it on your site. Categorize your products to make shopping for gifts easier. Use titles like "For Her," "For Him," "Gifts under $50," "Holiday Specials," etc.

Build a Better Online Mousetrap and They Will Not Only Come, but BUY! - Article by: Bob Speyer, Web Success Team LLC.

My Good Friend and Colleague Bob Speyer, President of the Web Success Team LLC. has written this terrific MUST READ Direct Response Marketing article - as seen on BestSyndication.com...

Build a Better Online Mousetrap and They Will Not Only Come, but BUY!

What is Direct Response and why is it so effective?
It is easy to “get lost” on the Internet. Trying to build the better mousetrap online, cheese and all, and not attract the “mouse” is a waste of time and resources. The key to web success is to get measureable results. That’s where the power of Direct Response web development and marketing can help.

Since prospective customers and clients are one click away from the competition, an effective website needs to persuade them to stay and take action. Direct response websites focus on a defined target audience, create the intended mood from the start, and result in accomplishing at least one of three things: obtain a sale, schedule an appointment or collect a name and email address to be used for future outreach and sales opportunities.

With the right direct response website design and techniques, it is easy to turn visitors into buyers and change the way people think about the products and services offered. The interactive techniques used will humanize a website, drive traffic, collect valuable marketing information and generate sales and leads.

The Internet is the most economic and effective way for businesses to communicate. It is important to have a website that works productively! A smart, interactive direct response website positions one ahead of the competition. Prospective customers will have a higher level of confidence because the website focuses on them and their needs, clearly identifies the products or services promoted, and offers the right solution. And they will be willing to pay for it.

11 Proven WEB SUCCESS TEAM Direct Response techniques that will increase visitor viewing time and get more productivity from a website.

1. First Impression — The look and feel of a landing or home page should be immediately digestible in less than 5 seconds. Imagine leafing through a newspaper and an attractive ad or headline catches you eye. Why? Because it grabs your attention and you can relate to its content.

2. Seek the Balance — The landing page should look designed, not over designed. This may be a matter of “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” but there has to be substance, not just beauty marks. For example, flash or music elements can enhance, but also annoy. Remember most viewers want to roll up their sleeves and “window-web shop.” They are looking for something. The question is whether it is “your something!”

3. It Speaks! — “Silence is not always golden.” A website with an audio message that is carefully crafted will give your site added personality, engage the viewer and give them more information in that precious 5 seconds of decision time — whether to stay or vamoose. They can even walk away from the screen and still listen to your site!

4. Fresh Is Good — “Today’s news is tomorrow’s fish wrap.” Make certain your content is relevant, concise, crisp. No bloviating. Use sharp headlines, sprinkle in informative sub-headlines that orient the reader and lead them into the text, and use a smattering of graphics or photos to reinforce the image.

5. Break the Mold — Celebrate your differences. What is it that makes you unique from the competition. Your viewers should know up front they came to the right place. Give them a feeling they haven’t experienced before. An out-of-the- box solution. But don’t get too far from the core. Remember Clinton’s move to the center to capture more winning votes! Unless of course your products or services demand an “off-the-wall” solution.

6. Something for Nothing — You should offer a viewer a caveat for just visiting your site (such as a downloadable report, free offer, etc.). And by the way, while you’re giving it away, capture their name and email for further marketing outreach. We call it in direct response web marketing lingo, an op-in. I always like downloadable pdfs, branded with your contact information. That way your branding is on their desktop and they can refer to the article or content, revisit your site, or contact you. You remain a top-of-mind presence on their computer.

7. It’s Not about YOU — Well it ultimately is, but in this web technique, your viewer wants to see “what’s in it for them.” So it is important to address their needs and concerns, to be the solution to their problem. If you make them feel like they can relate to your site, you are half way to a sale or call.

8. Going Somewhere? — Remember, the idea is to engage the viewer and keep them navigating through your site. The navigation should be logical and easy to maneuver. Some nav bar headings should be creative, not just the simple who, what, where and when. For example, instead of putting a special offer only in the body, put a nav that says Limited Time Offer and in a different color to attract their attention.

9. Two Way Traffic — Communication is a two-way street. Give the viewer ample opportunity to communicate with you. Not just “Contact Us.” Rather develop an ASK page that asks them to tell you their biggest single question about… (what ever it is they need answering) or an online survey. You capture their name and email in the process and can email a response to their question or result of their survey. This also helps you build your email list and develop a relationship with that list.

10. Your Alter Ego — The use of testimonials is important for credibility. Call them rave reviews. It gives the viewer some recognition that people are satisfied with your products and services. Use of audio to accompany the written testimonials is also a novel way to present them.

11. The First Step — It is never too late to implement effective direct response web marketing techniques. As in the old Chinese proverb, “The longest journey begins with the first step.” The beauty of the web and web marketing is that it is a fluid environment. See what’s working for your site, revise it, hone it and improve it. Be clear, talk straight and test and track.

Direct Response Marketing to Hispanics Offline and Online!

Why Hispanic Direct Response Marketing Works...
The process of acculturation influences the Hispanic consumer’s perception of direct marketing. While most consumers in the general market dismiss direct marketing materials as junk mail, Latinos — particularly recent immigrants — welcome it as a means of becoming a more informed.
Overall, Hispanic households are 3.5 times more likely to respond to a direct mail solicitation than a non-Hispanic household; 72% say they always read their mail, including direct marketing; 60% of the direct mail sent to homes is in English; 52% of the respondents speak only Spanish in their homes.

Marketing to Hispanics Online…
Like never before, online information is influencing major purchase decisions among Hispanics. Over 60 percent of online Hispanics consider the internet the best information source for making their final brand decisions.

Research has shown that almost half of the adult Hispanic population has internet access at home (44 percent), and nearly 60 percent have access from any location.

Most importantly, half of Hispanics with internet access at home are on broadband. As Hispanics become more accustomed to using the web, they are beginning to carve out their own unique path in search of an online community that reflects their unique lifestyle, issues and culture.

Young people 24 and under represent 35% of all Hispanic online users. While their online activities resemble those of the general youth market, they have unique characteristics. Their culture, heritage and language define their online behavior and how they respond to marketing messages.

I found this information to be very useful I hope you do too!

3 Membership/Subscription Website Success Tips

What should you consider when starting a paid membership/subscription website?

The answers are NOT always so EASY, even to a professional print or electronic publisher. The sources used to generate membership website subscriptions are very different from those used to generate print subscriptions...

1.)
Research Your Target Market...
Target to a specific group of interests who share very specific information needs, and are willing to pay a premium price for that information monthly and or annually. Do your research to find out what type of information people are willing to pay for.

2.) Prepare a Detailed Membership Website Content Plan...

Outline your content in as much detail as possible and make sure you have enough content to publish new information ongoing. You want to publish information that is hard to find and or in demand.

3.) Prepare A Detailed Competitive Market Analysis.
Search for competitive sites, request sample copies or purchase competitive publications, request media kits (which often contain tons of information about the market) and understand advertising and subscription pricing policies for your competition. This can help you to determine price points for your own membership fee with little effort.

An Article About Quality Web Content - By Robin Nobles

I am recommending this article for you to check out:

25 Ways to Add Quality Content to Your Web Site....
By Robin Nobles - July 05, 2006

We've known for a long time that quality matters to Google. In a post Senior Google Engineer Matt Cutts made to his blog, "quality" was mentioned several times as being important to Google. Quality matters when it comes to content, and it matters when it comes to links.

However, building content and links doesn't have to be painful. Web site owners tend to think of content in a very limited way.

So, let's open up our creative minds and think of all sorts of ways of adding quality content to a Web site.

A few things to remember:

  • You're only confined by the boundaries you set for yourself and your Web site. Allow yourself to think in a totally different way than you've thought before.

  • Your Web site content should be written for your buying customers . . . not for you. Your Web site content should not be written for the search engines. The search engines are not your target audience.

  • Think of the overall picture of your site, as if it were a living, breathing entity. After all, Web sites should continue to grow on a constant basis and never be stale or stagnant.

Have You Seen Google's ALL New SEO Tool, Google Trends?

Here is a fun New SEO Tool from Google! I have been using it in beta version and having fun watching the niche trends I'm interested in. I recommend you do the same.

    Learn About Google Trends

With Google Trends, you can compare the world's interest in your favorite topics.

Enter up to five topics and see how often they've been searched for on Google over time. Google Trends also displays how frequently your topics have appeared in Google News stories, and which geographic regions have searched for them most often.

So How does Google Trends work?

Google Trends analyzes a portion of googol web searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you enter relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. We then show you a graph with the results -- our search-volume graph -- plotted on a linear scale.

Located just beneath our search-volume graph is our news-reference-volume graph. This graph shows you the number of times your topic appeared in Google News stories. When Google Trends detects a spike in the volume of news stories for a particular term, it labels the graph and displays the headline of an automatically selected Google News story written near the time of that spike. Currently, only English-language headlines are displayed, but we hope to support non-English headlines in the future.

Below the search and news volume graphs, Google Trends displays the top cities, regions, and languages for the first term you entered. Learn more today at: www.google.com/trends.

Let me know what you think?
    Enjoy!
